Baby Chick Update!
After a heart wrenching first few days we have lost no more baby chicks, and everyone appears to be thriving just fine. This set of birds was a “brown egg layer” mix so we don’t know the breeds of most of them. If you’ve got some guesses, let me know! I can identify the Barred Plymouth Rocks and Black Sex-Links, and I think there are two Silver Laced Wynadottes, but that’s about it. None of them have feathered feet so I’m certain we have no Brahmas. This brings our current chick count to 23, and here’s to hoping it stays that way!

Are you sure that the little black ones with yellow tips aren’t Dominiques? I had two in the autumn that looked identical to the ones in that photo.

I’m pretty sure, they have white spots on their heads which is common for Barred Rocks or Black Sex Links, now that they are starting to feather they are coming in black and white striped which is the Barred Rock.
These are the breeds that are possible according to the hatchery:
Black Australorps
Lt. Brahmas
Dark Cornish
Black or White Giants
Buff or White Orpingtons
New Hampshire or Rhode Island Reds
Barred, White, Partridge, or Buff Rocks
Delaware
Speckled Sussex
Turkens
White, Silver Laced, or Columbian Wyandottes
Red Sex Link
Black Sex Link
We are supposed to get 5 of the listed possibilities. Oddly there were 5 black with white spots on their heads, and 5 all black. The rest are mostly buff shades (as chicks) and two were distinctly striped (those are the two I think might be Wyandottes). There was one “white” colored chick, but she’s one that didn’t thrive.
